Decorative Art History - Crafts Project
King Louis XV Rococo Drop Leaf Table
For this project in Decorative Art History, groups were given the task of recreating a decorative piece that could have been seen in the 16th to early 20th centuries. Our group created a King Louis XV rococo drop leaf style table. Characteristics of the French rococo style include an emphasis on elegance, femininity, and delicate ornamentation. After King Louis XV defined art by formality, social ideology in France transitioned to ideals of pleasure, comfort, and practicality. These elements were key to designing a side table worthy for a king.
Process

This table would most likely be placed in a drawing room or grand salon of aristocratic homes or hotel particuliers. Rococo interiors emphasized a fusion of the arts, blending all artistic elements of a room. Likewise, our table could be placed against a wall underneath a mirror/ wall paneling, or in the center of the room next to a fauteuil or chaise lounge. Its lightweight structure allows for mobility to accommodate social gatherings and the drop leaf sides increase table space to accommodate additional guests.
